Most Asked Questions About Head Lice

  • Head lice are tiny parasites that live in human hair and on the scalp. They spread through direct head-to-head contact and are not caused by poor hygiene.

  • Lice eggs are tiny oval or teardrop-shaped (nits) attached firmly to individual hair strands close to the scalp.

Unlike dandruff, nits do not brush off easily because they are glued to the hair shaft. They must be scraped or combed off with a fine-tooth comb to remove them.

  • Head lice do not jump or fly. They spread only through direct head-to-head contact with someone who has lice.

  • Lice do not survive long off the scalp, so deep cleaning the house is usually not necessary. Focus on items that had direct head contact within the last 72 hours.

  • To prevent lice from coming back, use a daily lice prevention spray, avoid head-to-head contact, and avoid sharing hats, brushes, or hair accessories. Regular hair checks help catch lice early.

General Questions About Head Lice

  • Super head lice are lice that are resistant to pesticide-based shampoos. They are still treatable, but many conventional lice shampoos are ineffective.

  • Head lice spread from person to person through direct head-to-head contact. They do not come from poor hygiene, pets, dirt, or the environment.

  • Common signs of lice include persistent itching, scratching behind the ears or neck, a crawling sensation on the scalp, visible nits attached near the scalp, and sometimes live bugs.

  • Head lice spread through direct head-to-head contact with someone who has lice. Lice cannot jump or fly and do not live on pets. Transmission most commonly occurs between children during close contact at school, sleepovers, sports, or family activities.

How To Identify, Screen, and Treat

  • Screen the hair in bright light using a lice comb or fine-tooth comb. Check small sections close to the scalp, especially behind the ears, at the crown, and at the nape of the neck.

Wet the hair slightly to slow lice movement. Comb from scalp to ends, wiping the comb after each pass. Look for live bugs and for nits that are firmly attached to the side of a hair strand near the scalp.

Learn How To Check For Lice At Home: https://www.nit-picky.com/blog/how-do-i-check-for-lice-at-home

  • Nits are most commonly found close to the scalp behind the ears, along the crown, and at the nape of the neck because these areas stay warm and protected.

  • Head lice eggs, called nits, typically hatch in about 7–10 days. After hatching, the young lice (nymphs) mature into adults within another 7–10 days and can begin laying eggs, continuing the lice life cycle.

  • Nits are glued firmly to the hair shaft and cannot be brushed away easily. Dandruff or debris moves freely and flakes off the hair when touched.

  • Everyone in close contact should be screened. Only those with live lice or active nits should be treated. The rest of the household can use preventive products if desired.

  • You can choose professional lice removal or a DIY treatment approach. In either case, the most important step is thorough nit removal. Most failed lice treatments happen because eggs are missed.

  • Many families struggle to get rid of lice because the eggs (nits) remain attached to the hair. If even a few nits are missed, they can hatch and restart the infestation. Successful lice treatment requires eliminating live lice, loosening the glue that holds nits to the hair, and carefully removing them with a professional comb.

  • Common head lice symptoms include an itchy scalp, itching on the neck, a rash on the back of the neck, visible nits, and sometimes difficulty sleeping due to scratching. Some people may have lice for weeks without noticeable symptoms.

  • Some people report feeling a tickling or crawling sensation on the scalp when lice are present. However, many people do not feel anything at all. The most common sign of lice is itching caused by the scalp’s reaction to lice bites.

  • Yes. Some people may carry lice for several weeks without noticeable itching or symptoms. Itching occurs from the body’s reaction to lice bites, and not everyone reacts immediately. This is why regular head checks are important when lice are suspected.

Lice and the Home Environment

  • Wash bedding, pillowcases, recently worn clothing, and hats that had direct head contact. Vacuum sofas, car headrests, and other surfaces where heads rested recently. Bag stuffed animals and throw pillows. Collect brushes and hair ties, place them in a plastic bag, and leave them in the freezer overnight

  • Lice can briefly crawl onto pillows or bedding, but they cannot survive long without a human scalp. Washing recently used bedding is enough.

  • No. Lice do not live on furniture. They depend on the human scalp to survive. It is still recommended to vacuum upholstered items that have had recent head contact.

  • Head lice usually die within one to two days off the scalp, although under some conditions they may survive for up to about three days.

  • Stuffed animals and plush toys can be placed in a sealed bag for about 72 hours or washed and dried on high heat. Because lice depend on the human scalp to survive, they cannot live long on toys or household items.

Lice Prevention

  • Head lice spread mainly through direct head-to-head contact between children. Teaching kids to avoid touching heads during play and keeping long hair tied back can help reduce the risk of lice spreading at school or daycare.

  • Close contact activities such as sports, group events, and sleepovers can increase the risk of lice spreading because children may lean heads together. Lice spread through direct contact rather than jumping or flying.

  • Children should avoid sharing brushes, combs, hats, helmets, or hair accessories. Although lice spread mainly through head-to-head contact, sharing personal hair items can occasionally transfer lice.

Lice Treatment Services

  • Professional lice removal typically takes about one hour per person, although the time can vary depending on hair length, thickness, and the level of infestation. During treatment, technicians carefully remove lice and nits using specialized products and professional combing techniques to ensure thorough removal.

  • Lice combing takes time because nits are firmly attached to individual hair strands and must be removed carefully. At home, lice removal can take 4–6 hours per person, while professional lice removal services typically average about one hour per person.

  • Professional lice treatments can work the first time when live lice are eliminated and nits are thoroughly removed from the hair. Because lice eggs may hatch after treatment, careful comb removal and proper follow-up checks help ensure the lice life cycle is fully interrupted.

  • Yes! We pride ourselves on one-time treatments due to using a meticulous professional lice treatment process, professional products, and a chemical-free combing technique.

Lice Treatment & Prevention Products

  • Yes. Nit Picky products are designed to be non-toxic, family-safe, and effective for both children and adults. Our approach avoids traditional pesticide treatments and instead focuses on enzyme-based nit removal, a fast lice elimination product, and careful professional combing to remove lice and nits from the hair.

  • Yes! Our formulas are sulfate-free, paraben-free, and gentle enough for all hair types, including color-treated and sensitive scalps.

  • Nit Picky lice treatment products are designed to be non-toxic and family-safe. Many pregnant or nursing mothers prefer treatment options that avoid traditional pesticide lice shampoos. As with any personal care product, individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult their healthcare provider if they have specific concerns.

  • Nit Picky uses a dual-approach lice treatment. One product contains enzymes that break down the glue that attaches lice eggs (nits) to the hair. A second product eliminates live lice in about 10 minutes. After treatment, we perform meticulous professional removal using a specialized lice comb.

  • Most over-the-counter lice shampoos can dry out the hair after repeated treatments. Nit Picky products are designed to be gentle and non-toxic, so they do not damage the hair themselves. During the professional nit removal process, the lice comb may create friction while pulling out attached nits, which can occasionally cause minor hair breakage. This is a normal part of thorough nit removal.

  • Nit Picky uses two specialized products during treatment. One contains enzymes that break down the glue that holds lice eggs to the hair. The second is oil-based and safely eliminates live lice in about 10 minutes. These products work together with professional comb removal to completely clear lice and nits.

  • Nit Picky treatments do both. Our lice elimination product eliminates live lice in about 10 minutes, while our enzyme formula breaks down the glue that holds nits to the hair. After treatment, we perform meticulous comb removal with a professional-grade lice comb to ensure lice and eggs are fully removed.

  • Lice eggs are firmly attached to the hair and must be physically removed. After treating the hair, Nit Picky technicians perform meticulous comb removal using professional-grade lice combs to ensure lice and nits are thoroughly removed, and the lice life cycle is interrupted.

  • Some lice populations have developed resistance to common pesticide treatments such as permethrin. These are sometimes called “super lice.” Because of this resistance, many families turn to treatment methods that focus on physical removal of lice and nits.

  • Definitely, our at-home DIY treatment kits include everything you need to remove lice and nits yourself, with clear, step-by-step instructions.

  • Yes. Many families try store-bought lice shampoos first. Nit Picky products can still be used afterward because they focus on breaking down nit glue and removing lice and eggs through professional combing, helping fully interrupt the lice life cycle.

  • We recommend daily use during school days, camp, or sleepovers. Just spritz lightly onto dry hair before leaving the house.
