7 Common Lice Symptoms

  1. Itching: The most common and noticeable symptom, itching occurs due to an allergic reaction to the bites of the lice. The itching can range from mild to severe and is often worse at night. Although not all people experience itching, some people do not itch because they are not allergic.

  2. Red or Irritated Scalp: Frequent scratching can lead to redness and irritation on the scalp. In some cases, secondary bacterial infections might develop due to broken skin from scratching.

  3. Visible Lice: Adult lice are tiny, about the size of a sesame seed, and can be difficult to spot. However, they are often visible crawling on the scalp or hair.

  4. Nits (Lice Eggs): These are small, white or yellowish eggs that attach firmly to the hair shafts close to the scalp. Nits are often mistaken for dandruff but are more securely attached.

  5. Sores or Scabs or Rash: Scratching can cause sores or scabs on the scalp, which may become infected if not treated. Sometimes a rash is present on the neck or down the back.

  6. Difficulty Sleeping: The itching and discomfort from lice bites can disrupt sleep, leading to restlessness or difficulty falling asleep, especially in children.

  7. Unusual Smell: In severe cases, a musty or unpleasant odor may develop on the scalp due to the presence of lice and their waste products.

If these symptoms are present, it's important to check for lice and consult a lice treatment specialist to confirm the diagnosis and get appropriate treatment.
