Is There A Season For Head Lice?

Head Lice become active as the weather warms up and in humid environments. States such as Hawaii, Florida and California have ideal climates for head lice. During the colder months head lice are still active they just move slower. When the weather heats up the bugs move faster and reproduce faster. Late spring and summer months are the active months and considered head lice season.

How To Prevent Head Lice During the Summer?

Avoid head to head contact through hugs, selfies, and sharing brushes. Use a head lice preventative spray to repel the bugs.
We recommend Nit Picky's Preventative Spray. It is non toxic, pesticide free with a water based consistancy. It includes five essential oils that repel head lice, mosquitios, and even ants away. Most store bought head lice repellants include one essential oil, professionally we do not believe one oil is enough. Click here to learn more about our Head Lice Prevention Spray.

How To Get Rid Of Head Lice Naturally

There is an overwhelming amount of information on the internet about what works and what does not work. So this post is written by a professional who has treated hundreds of individuals for head lice. All of whom have tried at home self treatments such as tea trea oil, vinegar, mayonaisse, cetaphil, vaseline and more. Despite what the person used, they still needed help and found themselves sitting in the chair of a professional head lice specialist. So what works and how do you get rid of head lice naturally?

1. Coconut Oil/Olive Oil
Apply coconut oil or olive oil to the hair and leave on 8-10 hours. The hair must be completely saturated and there cannot be any dry spots.
It works by smothering live lice and conditions the hair to enable effective lice combing. Do not put a plastic shower cap or bag on a child's head, remember it is a suffocation hazard. Instead wrap an old towel or thin cloth around the hair. Wash the oil out of the hair with regular shampoo and conditioner after 8-10 hours.

2. Use A Metal Lice Comb
Puchase a metal lice comb to remove the nits. Comb through sectioned hair with the lice comb to remove lice and nits from the hair. The oil should have killed most of the lice, however some resilent bugs may have survived. An oil treatment can be repeated as needed. Continue to comb through the hair until all of the nits are removed. Expect nit removal to take 4-10 hours per person.

3. Screen Daily
Check the hair for lice and nits everyday for the next week. It is a good idea to comb through the hair with the lice comb looking for missed nit and live bugs. It is normal to find nits and bugs during the screening time frame. Keep combing.

4. Hire A Professional
For moderate to heavy lice infestations or long, thick hair it is best to consider hiring a professional lice removal service. Most companies use non-toxic, pestiticide free products and can remove lice and nits in an estimate of 1-2 hours. Typically a professional can save a family time and money.

7 Common Lice Symptoms

1. Itchiness
Everybody's head itches from time to time. It can be from a weather change, new medication or simply a dry scalp. Unusual or excessive itchiness can be cause for concern. The irony is that some people who have head lice do not itch at all. Itchiness is a sign of an allergic reaction to head lice, so don't rule out head lice if you are experiencing other symptoms excluding itchiness.

2. Rash On Neck
A rash on the back of the neck and bumps on your head are a symptom of head lice. This could be a heat rash, however if the symptoms persist and get worse then you could be experiencing a symptom of head lice. If you are experiencing a rash and itchiness, get screened for lice right away. We commonly see client's who were prescibed a cream by their dermatologist for the rash. When the rash does not subside, they begin to wonder why and start to investigate further and find that they do have head lice.

3. Tickling Feeling
A moving feeling on the scalp or in the hair.

4. Excessive Dandruff
Dandruff is normal, however unusual or excessive dandruff can be caused from scratching due to head lice.

5.Swollen Lymph Nodes
Ocassionally lymph nodes on the neck and behind the ear become swollen due to head lice. It is usually associated with a rash on the neck and itchiness. The body is experiencing an allergic reation to the bites from head lice.

6. Nits or Lice Eggs In Hair
Nits are lice eggs that are stuck on the side of a hair strand. They are shiny, white, carmel, honey, or dark brown in color and the shape of a tear drop. They do not flake away or slide down the hair strand easily. You will need to scrap them off with your finger nails or tweezers.

7. Live Bug In Hair
If you saw or found a live bug in the hair then its almost certain that you have head lice. Sometimes bugs are found by a child who is scratching their head and the bug comes out in their finger nails. "Look mom what I found", the child tells the parent. Other times mom is driving the kids to school and finds a live bug crawling in her hair while looking in the rearview mirror. If you have a live bug in your hair, call for help asap.

What Are Super Lice?

What Are Super Lice?

Super Lice have been discovered in 48 states within the United States as of August, 2016. You have probably heard about super lice in the news and how they are becoming a big problem in the last few years since they are difficult to get rid of.

What Are Super Lice? Super lice are a resistant strain of head lice.

What Are Super Lice Resistant To? Super lice are resistant (immune) to the active ingredients commonly found in over the counter lice shampoos such as permethrin and pyrethrum. They are also becoming resistant to many prescription prescribed by physicians. Resistant means that products commonly used to kill head lice and their eggs are no longer working. Often times, physicians are now recommended leaving lice shampoos on for a longer period of time in an effort to increase the effectiveness of the product. This is an ineffective approach because resistant strains of lice are not affected by the shampoos and an increase in time will only result in the strains of lice becoming stronger against the shampoos.

How To Treat Super Lice? Nit Picky offers a non-toxic approach to treating super lice. The first step is to immediately stop using over the counter shampoos. The over use of these products is the reason that head lice have developed a resistance. If you do purchase an over the counter lice shampoo, use it as directed. If head lice are still alive after the first shampoo, then you may have a strain of super lice. Now this does not mean it's time to panic, it simply means that it is timeto consider another approach. Pick up the phone and give Nit Picky a call, we specialize in removing super lice. For those who want to perform self treatments, give us a call and ask us about what products will be beneficial in getting rid of super lice for good.
